The 'SPLINTERS', as this band is now known, began when a few enthusiastic players from SHEPPARTON BRASS AND WIND and friends got together to make. The music chosen was usually well known and loved songs, old time dance tunes, some jazz & swing, to early rock & roll. Splinters numbers range from 10 to 13 players. Our first official “gig” was at Mercy Nursing Home in May 2015.
Presently Splinters have regular bookings at many of the district retirement and nursing homes. Splinters have also performed at the 2015 Open Day of Lifestyle Villages in Shepparton, a concert for BlazeAid in Wughnu and at the term breakup for GV Connect. Splinters performed at the 2016 Australian Caravan Club National Muster, the District Lions Convention in Shepparton, and at two Alzheimer’s Australia tea dances in Violet Town and the City of Benalla. The dance floor, we were delighted to see, was put to good use at these functions, as it was in 2015 when Splinters performed our first “dance gig” at the Tatura Mens’ Shed Master Chef Luncheon. In both 2015 and 2016 Splinters participated in the Big Blow Concerts at Violet Town which raised funds for the victims of the cyclones and earthquakes in Vanuatu, Nepal and Fiji. Splinters played on the Shepparton railway platform to welcome the arrival of the first train from Melbourne on the new afternoon timetable. Splinters played for the Rotary 9800 Conference in Shepparton at both the welcome social & the official opening ceremony. During 2017 Splinters have added a couple more Aged Care centres to our roster. In June we again combined with Euroa Citizens Band to play at a fundraiser at GraniteHill in Euroa, accompanied by the Cool Cat Rockers. We have played an evening tea dance; and an old time dance for St Augustines. We performed at Tatura Men’s Shed for a fundraiser at the Italian Social Club in Tatura. We joined in the People’s Picnic at Kidstown & participated in the annual Shepparton Brass & Wind Eastbank Concert in November. We wound up the year with a couple of Christmas breakups for Probus & Tarcoola. In 2018 and 2019 the band continued to play weekly at retirement villages & nursing homes. There were other Seniors Week engagements, opening of the new family court in Shepparton, birthday parties, Christmas parties and special anniversaries for different community organisations. 2020 had got off to great start till we came up against the current Coronavirus that has shut virtually all activity across Australia. We will be back when it settles.
